ROBERTA TEWES
I have been interested in creating images for as long as I can remember. In my adolescence I had the good fortune to be able to study with a portrait painter in Sevilla Spain and learned to draw and was introduced to painting with pastel and oil. I attended San Francisco State College and studied painting with the luxury of being able to spend time working out ideas on paper and canvas, but more of an influence for me came years later designing color for comic book character, Nightwing (Batman’s adult persona of former sidekick, Robin) for DC Comics.
The technique I have been exploring for a number of years I developed from painting table tops for a restaurant. It involves applying a collage of paper cut into shapes to a wood panel and then painting images in the troupe l’oeil style so the objects appears to sit on the background. The objects relate to the collage in some way, sometimes as a visual pun.
I enjoy the labor intensive process of preparing the panel, cutting the paper, glueing, and finally painting and seeing the whole thing come together.
